Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS) has gained recent public attention because of the large number of people it affects. We have included it here because the Sitolonic is a boon for LGS sufferers.  LGS is not directly caused by the colon, but stems from the small intestine, an organ inextricably bound to the colon. In the digestive process, materials pass directly from the small intestine into the colon; therefore, if the small intestine is sick, it will send inappropriate materials into and thereby weaken the colon. But let’s back up a little here and find out, what exactly is LGS?

Leaky Gut Syndrome occurs when the delicate walls of the small intestine become inflamed, allowing toxins inside to seep through the membrane into the bloodstream — hence the term “leaky.” This leakage puts stress on the body, particularly affecting the liver, lymph, endocrine and immune systems. Common LGS problems include headaches (migraine), asthma, food allergies, eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, fungal disorders, and inflammatory joint disorders like arthritis. PMS, uterine fibroid, breast fibroid, and pediatric immune deficiencies are also linked to the syndrome.

Two culprits are responsible for LGS, the overuse of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Antibiotics indiscriminately kill off bacteria in the body, including the 500 species of necessary and beneficial bacteria in the small intestine. The loss of these bacteria interferes with healthy metabolism and also weakens the integrity of the intestine lining, allowing the “leakage” that starts the syndrome. Sometimes antibiotics can help your body stave off illness, but when they are overused they do more harm than good. In addition to the damage done by antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen exacerbate LGS by damaging the mucosal lining of the small intestine.

Food allergies are a common result of LGS. When there are gaps in the small intestine wall, toxins can get through, but so can undigested food particles. If the body is not ready for these particles, it will think some of them are foreign bodies that must be combated with an immune response. This causes inflammation of the lining, which is repeated every time that particular food particle touches it, further weakening the structure. Thus, a food allergy is born.

The Sitolonic can help LGS sufferers primarily in two ways. The first is by speeding up the removal of feces from the colon, which will then decrease the amount of time materials spend in the small intestine. This will, in turn, reduce the amount of particles that leak through the lining, alleviating the overall impact of LGS on the body. The second method is by boosting the body’s own immune and healing abilities, giving it more resources to battle off poisonous agents.  For more information on how this works, please see: What is the Best Way to Clean the Colon?
